Exchange of MoU Document by Prof. Ram Rajasekharan, Director, CSIR-CFTRI and GRAAM Executive Director Shri Basavaraju R

CSIR-CFTRI (Central Food Technological Research Institute) Mysore and Grassroots Research and Advocacy Movement (GRAAM) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 20th September 2016. The MoU supportstribal women entrepreneursto become self-sustained by means of S&T intervention.

In the signing ceremony organized at CFTRI, Prof. Ram Rajasekharan, Director, CSIR-CFTRI exchanged documents with Mr. Basavaraju R, Executive Director, GRAAM.

GRAAM has taken up a social business project with the support of NABARD financial services limited (NABFINS) to facilitate a group of ragi producers to make several value added products based on ragi and to link them to the nearest market so that the ragi producers can be benefited by way of increased employment and income apart from supporting sustainable ragi production. Jagankotehaadi in H.D Kotetaluk of Mysore district has been chosen for the implementation of this project.

This is traditionally a ragi growing community where people are knowledgeable of ragi cultivation and production practices. As part of the Initiative, a market survey was undertaken in the Mysuru city to understand the consumer preferences and the prevailing products of ragi in the market.

CSIR-CFTRI has developed a large number of value added products from millets including ragi and majority of these have been commercialized as well. These include ragi based papads, decertification of ragi, flaking of ragi, malted ragi flour, millet based cookies, ragi based murukku mix, Convenience powder from ragi suitable for stiff porridge (Mudde) and so on.

Under the MoU, CSIR-CFTRI will assist GRAAM by means of

  • Technical consultation for the establishment of a Production unit
  • Capacity Development, Technical support for streamlining production including hygiene
  • Quality of packaging system

Mr. Basavarajuthanked the Director, CSIR-CFTRI for accepting to support GRAAM in establishing a social business model driven by the women. He also acknowledged the support from Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement, the organization serving committedly for the development of tribal community in H D Kote region.

Prof. Ram Rajasekharanstated that it is a welcome opportunity for us to directly engage with the rural community by offering diverse technology and solutions based on Ragito the grassroot level organization to be self-reliant.
