Empowered Youth to Empowered Nation – Bridging the gaps: SBI Foundation

SBI Youth for India Fellowship is a flagship programme of SBI Foundation (the CSR arm of State Bank of India). The foundation had organized its first Alumni Meet at State Bank Learning Centre, Jakkur, Bengaluru on March 17th, 2018. Fellowship is being implemented in partnership with the various reputed non profit organizations, in which it provides a framework for India’s best young minds to join hands with rural communities, empathize with their struggles and connect with their aspirations. The Programme seeks to help India secure an equitable and sustainable growth path by providing educated Indian youth with an opportunity to touch lives and create positive change at the grass root level in rural India.

Sports, Games and Physical Education

While writing an article for GRAAM’s Newsletter on Kreedotsava (Sports Festival), I came across three words which most of the times are used synonymously (especially two them) but while looking up for their definitions, I found that they are not. While sorting out my confusion, I thought of bringing out a small note for larger audience on these three words …. Sports, Games and Physical Education.

Let’s start with a definition of these three words from various dictionaries[1]Sports is an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively for entertainment such as soccer and rugby. Games is a competitive activity in which players contend with each other according to a set of rules for amusement or fun, like the game of basketball; the game of cards. Whereas Physical Education is an instruction in physical exercise and games, especially in schools. It is more focused on developing and learning fundamental key skills which can be used throughout life e.g. walking, running, catching.

As the above definitions suggest there is an overlapping meaning between sports and games but the basic difference is sports requires some sort of physical effort of specialized skill, while word ’games’ is not constrained to it and emphasizes more on organized affairs with rules.

Chirayu: A auxiliary health care initiative that improves academic performances

GRAAM is implementing a comprehensive school development program named, “Sugamya Shiksha” with the support of Page Industries in nine schools across three districts of Karnataka. The objective of the program is to strengthen the public education system by complementing resources to ensure comprehensive learning and development of children.

It is a proved fact that the children with untreated hearing loss are likely to experience delayed language, speech development, communication and even cognitive skills. The earlier hearing loss occurs in a child’s life, the more serious the effect on the child’s development if left untreated. Thus, it is important not only to identify but also treat the hearing loss among children as early as possible. However, in India, children with hearing difficulties usually remains unidentified due to negligence and unawareness of parents towards the issue. Non-treatment of hearing difficulties among school going children leads to lack of interest in studies and subsequently poor scores. Therefore, identifying the hearing loss among school going children and providing them hearing aids along with regular consultation is vital to prevent learning deficiencies among these children.

Belief, Practices and Folk Medicine for Child Health

Blind believes, norms and practices related to child health are not new to the people living in the rural areas of Gangavathi Taluk in Koppal district of Karnataka. These blind believes starts from sowing the seed of fear in the mind of people to physically hurting children. These practices are beyond the boundaries of caste and religion. Different practices are followed in different parts of the region. We have documented the practices that are focused on child health in the selected villages of Gangavathi taluk.

  1. Jaundice (among children)

There are two forms of medicines that are widely practiced in the villages of Gangavathi for jaundice i.e, by using turmeric cloves or medicinal creepers. Durgappa, one of the traditional healers lives in Agoli village of Gangavati taluk. People from neighbouring villages visit him to cure jaundice. At first, Durgappa identifies whether child is really suffering from jaundice or not. If yes, then only he gives the medicines. The process of treating jaundice is as follows:

  • Turmeric cloves (Arisina Kombu) is burnt in the flame of diya (lamp) and child’s both hands and keens are burnt with the hot cloves.
  • The burnt spot gets swollen, puss fills into it and finally burst out and entire puss comes out.
  • This process will take one week, after which people believe that jaundice will be cured.

The other forms of treatment for Jaundice is using creeper 

According to the people, doctors themselves suggest people to take medicine from the traditional healers. Hence most of the people go to the traditional healers to get relief from jaundice. Tippanaala village is famous to give medicine for jaundice using creepers.  According to the traditional healers there are two types of jaundice i.e., white jaundice and green jaundice. White jaundice is considered to be very dangerous.

Not every person engaged with sports/physical activity have to become a sport person or an athlete. It is important as sports/physical activity helps in developing key skills in eye and body coordination, aptitude, physical agility and balance.
