Arogyashreni - Technology Enabled Community Governance of Primary Health Centers
Arogyashreni is a project being implemented by GRAAM with administrative co-ordination of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, GoK, to create a platform for community monitoring of Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in Mysore district. The goal and objectives of the project are as follows :
Goal :
- Enabling technology for effective community monitoring
Objectives :
- To collaborate with communities in the creation of the monitoring system for their local PHCs.
- To utilize the information gained from the monitoring system to create awareness and empower the community to drive for change.
- To develop a technology based monitoring system using IVRS through mobile phones which facilitates the collection and transfer of data.
The project covers 120 rural PHCs spread across 7 taluks of Mysore district. By capturing community perspectives on the facilities and services provided in each PHC through an innovative use of Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS), the project aims to create the first ever community monitoring information database about rural PHCs in the entire district of Mysore. The project is implemented in collaboration with the Department of Health and Family Welfare, GoK with the technical support of Mr Kiran Anandampillai, Bengaluru and Mahiti Infotech, an IT company based in Bengaluru.
The monitoring information collected from the community representatives is analysed and processed to generate PHC rankings which is widely circulated among the community, public representatives, and government officials. This process will create awareness among the community about the status of facilities provided by PHCs, and encourage them to participate in the improvement of health services.
A toll-free number has been created for the community representatives to provide information on the status of their respective PHCs over phone. The toll-free number was recently inaugurated by the NRHM Mission Director, Mr. S. Selva Kumar.
